Dr Lindsay Zhou

Congratulations to Dr Lindsay Zhou on receiving the 2021 European Society for Paediatric Research Young Investigator Start Up Grant of 10,000 Euros for research on treatment for preterm brain injury.

Dr Zhou's project is investigating the use of umbilical cord blood-derived stem cells as a treatment for preterm brain injury. This includes a world-first clinical trial of autologous cord blood-derived stem cells in extremely preterm infants (the CORDSAFE trial); study of these cells in the laboratory including characterisation and expansion; and examining the neuroprotective effects of these cells in a fetal sheep model of preterm brain injury.

The long-term goals of Dr Zhou's work are to develop a potential cell therapy for the injured neonatal brain, and therefore reduce neuro-disability in survivors of extreme prematurity.

Dr Zhou said, "Delighted to be awarded the grant; this is recognition for the fantastic translational work in perinatal neuroprotection that is occurring at The Ritchie Centre, Monash University and Monash Newborn.".

Dr Lindsay Zhou is a PhD student in the Department of Paediatrics, supervised byProf Suzie Miller,A/Prof Atul Malhotra,Dr Courtney McDonald and Dr Tamara Yawno.
