Global Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation Market: Overview
Hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs) are present in the bone marrow and blood. They are also known as hematopoietic progenitor cells (HPCs). Hematopoietic stem cells are capable of producing mature blood cells, such as platelets, white blood cells, and red blood cells. These cells are used in the treatment of different types of malignant diseases (e.g. lymphoma, leukemia) and non-malignant (e.g. hemoglobinopathies, bone marrow failure) to rebuild or replace a patient's hematopoietic system. This type of treatment is known as stem cell transplant or bone marrow transplant. Hematopoietic stem cells have also been used in clinical trials with U.S. FDA oversight for the treatment of genetic diseases, autoimmune diseases, and other indications. Over the last 30 years, the hematopoietic stem cells transplantation market has seen a rapid and constant expansion with advancements in lifesaving technologies. Hematopoietic stem cell transplantation brings about restoration of the patients medullary and immune function while treating a diverse range of about 70 non-hematological and hematological disorders. Overall, hematopoietic stem cells transplantation is used in the treatment of immunological, oncological, non-malignant, hematological, malignant, and hereditary diseases.

There are two types of stem cell transplants: allogeneic and autologous. Allogeneic HSCT involves the replacement of diseased or damaged cells with cells from a healthy donor. The donors tissue type needs to match the receivers tissue type as closely as possible to help prevent the risk of problems with the transplant. Allogeneic transplantation is used for therapeutic intervention of patients with hematological disorders (cancerous or non-cancerous). Autologous HSCT replaces diseased or damaged cells with the patients own stem cells. Harvesting of a patients stem cells is done before chemotherapy, and harvested stem cells are then transplanted back into the patient after treatment. Based on the source of hematopoietic stem cells, there are three types of HSCTs: cord blood transplant, peripheral blood stem cell transplant, and bone marrow transplant (BMT).
